The Rev’d Canon Joseph Fernandes

Vice-Dean and Canon for Congregation and Community

Joseph trained for ministry at Ripon College, Cuddesdon, and began his ordained journey serving his curacy in the Diocese of Oxford and later moved into roles within the Diocese of London.

Joseph has served as Rector of St Mary’s, Acton in East London, and as Vicar of St Hilda’s, Ashford, Middlesex and as Area Dean of Spelthorne. He has also been appointed a Prebendary of St Paul’s Cathedral.

A core aspect of Joseph’s ministry is his dedication to fostering inclusive and welcoming church communities where people of all backgrounds can encounter God’s love and grow in faith. He is passionate about issues of racial and social justice, previously serving as the Diocesan Chaplain in the Diocese of London for Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities advocating for groups who are frequently marginalised and overlooked within society.

Joseph is the Residentiary Canon for Congregation and Community and the Cathedral's Safeguarding Lead.

Originally from Portugal, he deeply values the diversity that different cultures bring to church life. He is married, has two children, and a beloved family dog.
