Lay Clerk

The Dean and Chapter of Chelmsford Cathedral seek to appoint a tenor and a bass Lay Clerk to join Chelmsford Cathedral Choir at an exciting phase in its development.

Job Title: Lay Clerk (Fixed Term appointment for 2 years)
Line Manager: Director of Music
Hours: Circa 9 hours per week during choir term-time
Salary: £10,000 per annum

To start: January 2025

Closing date for applications: Saturday 30th November 2024 at 12pm

Interviews will take place in the week beginning 9th December 2024


About the role

You will attend all rehearsals and services as required by the Director of Music and published in the Choir Diary, which is issued in advance of each term. While good sight reading is an important prerequisite, you will be expected to have prepared the repertoire and be able to sing any solos as instructed.

Organ Scholar

The Dean and Chapter of Chelmsford Cathedral seek to appoint an Organ Scholar for the academic year 2025-2026. The Scholarship is named after the late Graham Rogers, a benefactor of the Cathedral and its music, and is suitable for a graduate or experienced gap-year organist, offering a unique learning opportunity to gain experience as a cathedral organist. Working as part of a dedicated and supportive department, the Organ Scholar plays a key role in the delivery of the Opus Dei.

Scholarship details: £9500 pa bursary plus organ tuition bursary, accommodation provided

Closing date for applications: Friday 15th November, 12pm

Auditions: Tuesday 26th November

Applications: You application should be supported by the names of two referees, including

  • Your current organ teacher
  • Someone who has known you for at least two years.

There are around 250 volunteers here at Chelmsford Cathedral covering a great many roles which allows the Cathedral to open seven days a week, be a home to many community groups and continue to offer free entry to visitors.
