Young Organists from the Brentwood School shine in Cathedral recital

Students from Brentwood School delivered an impressive organ recital at Chelmsford Cathedral on Monday 16 March, showcasing their growing musical talents in front of family and friends.

The performance followed an earlier visit to the Cathedral, where the students took part in a dedicated workshop session. During the afternoon, they explored the Cathedrals Organs, learning about different organ stops and participated in masterclasses led by the Cathedrals Director of Music, Emma Gibbins and Assistant Director of Music, Samuel Bristow who helped the students to refine their technique and musical interpretation.

The recital programme featured a varied selection of works by composers including Leighton, Bach and Widor. A highlight of the evening was a performance of a piece for organ and trombone by Gustav Holst, adding a rich and distinctive dimension to the concert.

Speaking after the event, Sam Barber, music teacher at Brentwood School, praised the students’ progress, saying the recital was “a wonderful celebration of their organ playing” and that “it’s inspiring to see them all flourishing”.

The Cathedral continues to support young musicians by providing valuable opportunities for performance and professional guidance, helping to nurture the next generation of organists.
