Meet the Musicians: RSCM Voices South

RSCM Voices South will be joining us for the Evensong service on 17 January 2026. Rachel Reid, the choirs administrator, offers some background about the choir and provides a glimpse into their musical selections.

Can to tell us about the RSCM Voices choir and how long have you been running?

RSCM Voices South is an adult training choir of around 30 singers primarily drawn from parish church choirs in the south of England. The choir has been in existence since it was formed as RSCM Southern Cathedral Singers in the 1990s from singers attending RSCM cathedral courses.  It became RSCM Voices South in 2008.

How often do you come together to rehearse and perform?

We meet around five times per year and sing in cathedrals and major churches in the south of England.

Can you share what you love most about working with the choir and what makes the RSCM Voices choir special?

The choir enables members to sing repertoire and in venues that they might not be able to with their own church choirs and benefit from expert direction from our conductor Hilary Punnett who is Assistant Director of Music at St Pauls Cathedral as well as being Director of RSCM Voices South.

Can you give us an idea of your repertoire, and whether you have adapted this for your visit to Chelmsford?

The choir sings a wide repertoire of covering a wide range of styles and periods to provide different challenges.

We've chosen an anthem by the contemporary composer Carl Rutti-My Dancing Day) and canticles by Richard Shephard (The Gloucester Service) for our visit to Chelmsford.

RSCM Voices South will singing at our Evensong service 5:15pm on the 17 January 2026.
