The Revd Preb. Joseph Fernandes Installed as Vice-Dean of Chelmsford Cathedral

The Revd Preb. Joseph Fernandes was welcomed to Chelmsford Cathedral and installed as the as Vice-Dean and Residentiary Canon for Congregation and Community at a Choral Evensong service on Sunday 21 September.

The Cathedral was filled with members of the congregation, civic leaders, and friends from across the Diocese and Joesph’s previous churches to witness the service. The installation marks a significant moment for the Cathedral as Joseph takes up a key leadership role, supporting the Dean and focusing on strengthening the congregations as well as the relationship between the Cathedral and the city.

During the service, Joseph was formally collated and inducted into office, including the making of oaths and declarations. In taking up this role, he assumes responsibility—after the Dean—for the ministerial and collegiate life of the Cathedral, becomes a full member of Chapter and the Senior Leadership Team, and serves as the Cathedral’s Safeguarding Lead. He will oversee occasional offices, pastoral care, and take a leading role in work for social justice, ecological care and carbon net zero.

Reflecting on the installation, The Very Revd Dr Jessica Martin, Dean of Chelmsford, said:

“I’m delighted that Joseph has begun his ministry with us as Vice-Dean and Residentiary Canon. His gifts, experience and passion will enrich the life of the Cathedral, and I look forward with great joy to working alongside him and welcoming his family into our community.”

Meanwhile, The Revd Preb. Joseph Fernandes commented:

“It is a deep privilege to be installed as Vice-Dean and Residentiary Canon. I look forward with eager anticipation to meeting the people of Chelmsford Cathedral and the Diocese, to journeying with you in faith, hope and love. In the coming year, I pray we may together grow in outreach, deepen our worship, and serve our city and diocese faithfully.”

As Vice-Dean, Joseph will play a central role in shaping the life of the cathedral, supporting the Dean, guiding pastoral and congregational work, and championing justice and care for creation.

Joseph received his theological training at Ripon College Cuddesdon and commenced his ordained ministry in the Diocese of Oxford. He has subsequently held positions in the Diocese of London, including Rector of St Mary’s Acton in East London, Vicar of St Hilda’s, Ashford, Middlesex, and Area Dean of Spelthorne. Additionally, he served as a Prebendary of St Paul’s Cathedral and Chaplain to Gypsy, Roma and Travellers in London Diocese.
