Peter and the Wolf premieres at Chelmsford Cathedral

On Saturday we were delighted to host the first performance of Peter and the Wolf, Prokofiev’s musical fairytale, at Chelmsford Cathedral.

Children and their grown-ups enjoyed the story of brave young Peter vividly brought to life by storyteller Mike Dodsworth who expertly guided us through the lively score, creatively reimagined for the Cathedral organ by Assistant Director of Music Samuel Bristow.

In a first for the Cathedral the relaxed performance was delivered with seating arranged in the round with children sitting on soft mats at the front to help immerse them in the storytelling. Children also enjoyed a craft activity creating their very own bird puppet so they could join in with the music and storytelling throughout the performance.

The Cathedral's Assistant Director of Music Samuel Bristow said:

I can safely say that Saturday’s Peter and the Wolf performances here at Chelmsford were one of the highlights of my career. I was incredibly proud of the way in which we delivered the day as a team and was so thrilled to work with Mike Dodsworth, who was on sparkling form. His delivery of the story brought the day to life and his ferocious energy inspired me whilst playing. The organ responded well to the score and I was truly enthused to see so many smiles from the audience both before and afterwards. I feel so privileged to have been involved with a project which so many people have enjoyed!
