Which team was victorious at the inter faith cricket tournament this year?
The annual inter faith cricket match took place on Saturday 24th September 2022 at Boreham cricket ground.
Canon Ivor Moody, Chair of the Mid Essex Inter Faith Forum, shares his match report with us;
'The backdrop to our game this year with the Hindu and Islamic communities in Chelmsford was the riot and unrest in Leicester between the Hindu and Islamic communities there. After good relations for over fifty years in a very multi-cultural, multi-ethnic community, it was distressing to see how quickly and easily the well could be poisoned.
Perhaps then, our game this year was never more important. It was played in the usual magnificent, generous spirit, a wonderful afternoon’s cricket with an exciting, competitive edge that left us all happy and eager to repeat. And just for a change, the cathedral didn’t lose!! In a three-way knockout tournament, the Hindus were the victors, with the cathedral coming second as runners up!
Cricket is only part of this event though. Thanks to the generosity and work of the Islamic and Hindu communities, we were treated to a marvellous buffet reception in Boreham village hall after the game, and we were joined by The High Sheriff, a former Chairman of the Essex County Council and Chelmsford’s Deputy Mayor, as well as members of all three faith communities who had come to support us and cheer us on.
In my post-match speech, I aid this. I just wished that those who despised and persecuted others because of their race and religion could have stood right around the cricket ground and watched, and learned, how human beings ought to behave to one another.
Never truer is the saying that it is what unites us rather than what divides us which is where the hope for humanity lies.'
