Chelmsford Cathedral hosts Britten Sinfonia’s Surround Sound Playlist

Experience classical music like never before with Britten Sinfonia’s Surround Sound Playlist at Chelmsford Cathedral

Whether you are a lifelong fan of classical music or have never considered it your genre, Chelmsford Cathedral is invites you to experience Britten Sinfonia’s Surround Sound Playlist on Wednesday 19th March.

In what promises to be an inspiring and unforgettable experience, the audience are encouraged to sit, stand, or lie down as live music fills the Cathedral space from all directions, enveloping you in a live orchestral experience as the lighting shifts to match the mood of the live music.

Audiences will experience a rich and varied repertoire, from beloved, instantly recognizable pieces to stunning new discoveries, to create a seamless playlist, blending orchestral drama, solo virtuosity, and breathtaking choral beauty—all performed live in surround sound. The program features  by renowned composers such as Bruckner, Copland, Ēriks Ešenvalds, Handel, Morten Lauridsen, Parry, Prokofiev, Caroline Shaw, Vivaldi, and many more.

Britten Sinfonia will be joined by an extraordinary lineup of musicians, including Britten Sinfonia orchestra, Tenebrae choir, Amy Dickson (saxophone soloist), Joseph Tawadros (oud soloist) and our own Chelmsford Cathedral Choristers.

Director of Music Emma Gibbins said:

“I’m really excited that the Cathedral choristers have been invited to be part of this unique event.  It’s an amazing opportunity to have the chance to sing with not one, but two world renowned groups, the Britten Sinfonia and the choir, Tenebrae.  I personally can’t wait to experience some wonderful music in a really unusual and creative concert setting.”

As Britten Sinfonia is committed to making this extraordinary experience accessible to everyone and tickets are priced at 'Pay What You Can' rates starting from just £5 for both adults and children. Mats will be provided, and guests are welcome to bring additional cushions or beanbags for extra comfort. For those who prefer seating, chairs will be available along the cathedral walls and around pillars. All tickets are unreserved, with spaces allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
