Celebrating The Coronation of King Charles III at Chelmsford Cathedral


Celebrate this historic event at your Cathedral.

Everyone is welcome to mark this special occasion at Chelmsford Cathedral.

All events are free to attend.

From Tuesday 2nd May

Visit the Cathedral to take-a-look at our regal coronation display exploring the history and symbolism of the coronation ceremony alongside some creative contributions from the pupils of The Cathedral School. You’ll also be able to write a message of congratulations on a postcard to The King and add it to our community board ready for us to send to Buckingham Palace after the coronation.

The display will close after the bank holiday weekend.

Friday 5th May

5.15pm – Service to Celebrate The Coronation of His Majesty The King

Come together with others from across our city and county for a special service with readings, prayers and music from the Cathedral Choir all specifically selected for this historic occasion.

This is a ticketed service. Please book your free ticket here

From 6pm – Time of prayer and reflection for His Majesty The King

Take some time for private prayer, enjoy our coronation display and add your message of congratulations to The King to send to Buckingham Palace.

7.30pm – Compline

End the day with a service of Compline, a beautiful service of prayer sung by the Cathedral Choir.

The Cathedral will close after Compline at 8pm.

Saturday 6th May

The Cathedral will be open all day, from 7.30am until 6pm, for you to pray and light a candle for King Charles III on the day of his coronation.

From 9.30am - Ring for the King

The Cathedral bell ringers will be attempting a full peal of 5,000 changes, lasting approximately 3½ hours, to mark the Coronation.  All 12 bells will ring out from the Cathedral tower so please do stop by the Cathedral grounds to enjoy the peal.

Sunday 7th May

10.30am – Cathedral Eucharist

Joyful celebration of Holy Communion with special prayers for King Charles III.

3.30pm – Choral Evensong

Service sung by the Cathedral Choir including special prayers for King Charles III.
