Our Canon Precentor, the Revd Sebastian Harries, appeared on Phoenix FM last Friday as a guest on the One 2 Three Friday show, sharing the story of how music and faith have shaped his life and brought him to his role at Chelmsford Cathedral.
Seb spoke warmly about music being a constant thread through his life. From his early love of percussion and playing in bands as a teenager, to eventually studying music at university. He also described a period of real difficulty, when illness during his degree led him to question his faith. It was through exploring mindfulness, meditation, and then contemplative prayer - alongside time spent in religious communities - that his spiritual life was renewed. That journey ultimately led him to train for ordained ministry in the Church of England.
Today, both music and faith are central to Seb's everyday work as Canon Precentor, where he plays a key role in planning the rich and varied programme of worship at the Cathedral.
