Gaia is coming to Chelmsford Cathedral from Wednesday 12th October until Sunday 30th October.
Gaia is a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram. Measuring six metres in diameter and created from 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface, the artwork provides the opportunity to view the planet, floating in three dimensions. It will be suspended, two metres up, giving visitors an opportunity to see the earth as astronauts see it from space and will fill the nave of Chelmsford Cathedral.
Opening times vary. Details on how to reserve tickets, special events and half-term events for families can be found on our website chelmsfordcathedral.org.uk/gaia and on Facebook @chelmsfordcathedral
Visit during the day:
Gaia is free to visit during the day. We are offering timed entry so you can plan your visit. Alongside Gaia there will be an opportunity to discover how Gaia was created and how small changes can make a big difference to our planet. We are offering relaxed visiting sessions.
Visit during the evening:
Gaia is spectacular viewed after dark. Gaia is both illuminated from within and via blue uplighters really highlighting the breath-taking world suspended before you. The Cathedral will also be lit outside especially for the occasion. Accompanying the installation is a specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award winning composer Dan Jones.
Special events:
The Cathedral is also planning some amazing one-off events under Gaia. Come and take part in a yoga experience by candlelight or listen to a world-music concert. There are lunchtime concerts too all against the backdrop of the Gaia installation. And partnering with ARU, we are pleased to be part of their Science Festival.
Half Term:
We are extending our day-time opening hours during half term and the Cathedral will be open every evening too. There will be activities taking place in Guy Harlings Garden just across from the Cathedral for families, but this week has something for everyone.
