An Evening of Conversation and Music with Bishop Guli

Mon 27 April 2026 Time: 7:00pm - 8:30pm

As part of our Storytelling Programme we are delighted to welcome Bishop Guli to the Cathedral for an evening of conversation and music inspired by her latest book, Listening to the Music of the Soul.

The book was selected as The Archbishop of York’s Advent Book 2025, who writes:  “The quest for authenticity has been a hallmark of Guli’s journey since she arrived in this country as a refugee forty years ago… She has an extraordinary ability to hear the music not only of the soul but of the future, and emboldens us to dance to it today.” — Bishop Robert Atwell

During the evening, Bishop Guli will take us on a deeply personal journey. Her forced exile from her homeland echoes the Flight into Egypt; the murder of her brother Bahram during the Iranian Revolution evokes the Slaughter of the Innocents. She reflects movingly on how angels continue to speak to us today, how fear can prevent us from living fully in the present, and how pain and loss can be transformed through the power of beauty.  Through the evening the music that accompanies the book will also be played and discussed.

The event will be hosted by our Dean, The Very Revd Jessica Martin, and will include time for conversation, questions, and discussion with Bishop Guli. A book signing will follow.

Tickets are free, but advance booking is recommended here.
