On Sunday 1st December, Advent Sunday, we gathered together for the Advent Procession.
In Advent we are called to “awake out of sleep” and hear God’s voice calling us to action. Through the use of light and darkness, music and movement, the Advent Procession helps us to explore these themes.
The service began in complete darkness, and we heard in scripture and in music the story of the prophets called to prepare for the Messiah. Gradually, light spreads through the Cathedral, just as God’s Word illuminates the world. Voices of song called to us from all directions in the Cathedral, just as we hear the voice of God’s prophets calling to us in Advent.
The service was beautifully sung by the Cathedral Choir, directed by Director of Music Emma Gibbins with the organ played by Samuel Bristow, Assistant Director of Music.
During Advent the Cathedral is offering a powerful Advent course based on Sleepers Wake: Getting Serious About Climate Change, the Archbishop of York’s 2022 Advent book. Led by Revd Canon Kate Moore, the course will be held every Thursday evening from 7.15pm to 8.15pm, will run from 21st November through to 19th December. To find out more, visit our Learning pages.
