Chelmsford Cathedral is very proud to be part of the national Cathedral Cycle Relay 2025, with one of our younger congregation members leading the way.
This year, it was nine-year-old John Hunt who handed over the baton at St Albans Cathedral.
The Chelmsford Cathedral School pupil was still smiling after taking on his longest ever ride of 50 miles, alongside his mum Fiona, Anne Locke of the Association of English Cathedrals, and Cathedral Cycle Route rider Terry Smith.
“John did brilliantly,” says his proud mum.
“He did the peloton most of the way, cycling as a group, and he needed to be held back at times as others were not quite so quick!”
The picturesque ride took them along riverside paths and old railway lines. "The cycle route was lovely and mainly flat, ending with a warm welcome from St Albans," she adds. “We had a great day, it was a super cycle. One puncture was our only issue.”
After St Albans, the relay continued with Phil Waller and Gemma Jones among the team riding to St Paul's Cathedral along the 2,000-mile loop which links every Church of England Cathedral in the country.
The relay, now in its third year, started on 24 May at Bradford Cathedral covering 42 cathedrals in 42 days, and will finish on 5 July back where it started. It has the aim of promoting environmentally friendly travel, as well as physical wellbeing and spiritual reflection.
