Chelmsford Cathedral is delighted that the County Harvest Service is once again taking place in the Cathedral on Sunday 29 September at 3.30pm.
During this Harvest Festival season, the service provides the opportunity for us all to reflect on the fruitfulness of creation. As our farmers gather with us to worship, we will give thanks for their work during the weather challenges of 2024 and for their commitment to sustainably producing the food which nourishes us.
This year we are pleased to celebrate the bicentenary of one of our iconic local food producers, Marriages the Millers. This Chelmsford mill sources most of its wheat from the farms of our Diocese and produces a range of high-quality flours. To complete the field-to-fork experience, Marriages are generously providing our refreshments after the service.
Revd Canon Janet Nicholls, Rural Adviser and Agricultural Chaplain said,
Everyone is warmly invited to the service to give thanks to God and our farmers for the food produced on the land of our Diocese. We will especially recognise the perseverance of our farmers as they contended with exceptionally wet sowing and growing seasons.
The service will once again include the participation of the farming community from across the Diocese and we are looking forward to the Bishop of Bradwell, Rt Revd Adam Atkinson, preaching the sermon.
This year we welcome Marriages the Millers to the Cathedral in celebration of their bicentenary. We will hear about their 200 year heritage of milling Essex wheat into flour and experience the fruits of their labour in the refreshments after the service!
Everyone is welcome to join us.
