A Pause For Prayer

We invite you to Pause, an opportunity to find calm in the Cathedral, with our Director of Music, Emma Gibbins, providing a peaceful piano programme

As part of Thy Kingdom Come, an eleven-day programme of prayer between Ascension and Pentecost, Emma will be a creating a special opportunity to share the peace the Cathedral provides, right at the heart of our busy city. She'll use her musical expertise to create a calming atmosphere, she explains. “Some music allows you to relax, focus on your thoughts and reflect on things more deeply,” says Emma. “It’s particularly fitting to use music to enable deeper thought and prayer during this time. I’ve chosen contemplative, reflective piano music which helps me forget about the stresses of daily life as I play and I hope others will find this beautiful music helpful as they come into our beautiful Cathedral to pause, take a break, spend some time in prayer or just reflect on their day.”

Pause will begin at 6pm on Thursday evening, with Emma playing three sessions of forty minutes on the hour each hour until 9pm, in between will be a 20 minute break to allow for silence and space, she adds. “Amongst other pieces, I’ll be playing music by Einaudi, known for his unique minimalist style which uses lots of repeating patterns to create atmosphere and an introspective feel, transporting you to a spiritual place.”

The Cathedral will be open from 6pm-9pm on Thursday June 5th
