Light of Hope at Chelmsford Cathedral

Remembering those who give so much in caring for others

On November 1st, Chelmsford Cathedral will be taking part in a spectacular light display together with other cathedrals across the country.

It coincides with All Saints and All Souls’ days which are two days in the churches calendar that are especially poignant this year. All Saints Day (November 1st) traditionally celebrates saints across the world and throughout the ages who have been a beacon of light to others. This year we are also encouraged to remember those who give so much in caring for others. All Souls’ Day (November 2nd) is a special day to remember and give thanks for friends and relatives who have died and to remember their lives with love. On the evening that spans these two days, Chelmsford Cathedral will shine beams of light, high into the night sky as we stand with the country at this difficult time.

‘Light of Hope’ is the work of sculptor Peter Walker and he says of the project, “Light of Hope is an opportunity for us to collectively remember those who have helped and given so much during the past year, as well as take time to remember those we have lost and think about those near to us”

There is no particular time for the lights switch on, in order to conform with government restrictions, but do take a look outside, or take an evening walk with your family, or those in your bubble and take a moment to reflect on those who are beacons of light to us and remember those who are no longer with us. The Cathedral will also be open during the daytime for anyone wishing to come in and pray or sit quietly or maybe light a candle. We hope that our own ‘beams of light’ will remind people that we are not alone at this time.
