Chelmsford Cathedral Chelmsford Cathedral

Crime and Deviance Study Day

On Wednesday 2nd November over 250 students and staff from schools across Essex, from Southend to the East of London, gathered for another in our series of ‘Crime and Deviance’ days.

Designed to be a cross curricular day, students have the chance to explore various aspects of crime, the law and rehabilitation which accesses various of the academic disciplines they experience as A level students. It is also a chance for Chelmsford Cathedral to offer a truly diocesan wide event incorporating many areas of our vast diocese, and introduces to the young people the concept of a cathedral being used as a teaching and debating space, as well as a welcoming one which is open to all.

The day looked at why we commit crime and some of the factors associated with that; the concept of ‘Green’ crime and how abuse of the environment can be seen as a criminal act; a former police officer who talked about his experiences of being in the police force, and two students from The Drapers Academy in Romford who presented a fascinating and well thought out ‘for and against’ over the issue of migrants and the proposed deportations to Rwanda. Members of Essex University were also on hand to talk to the students about further study and career opportunities.

Next year we hope to put on a similar event, but this time looking at a day dedicated to science. Watch this space!
