The Cathedral Choirs

The Cathedral Choir

The Cathedral is served by a traditional choir of boys and adults whose prime responsibility is to maintain a pattern of regular choral services from week to week. The choristers attend a number of local schools, ranging in age from 7 to 15. They come to the Cathedral for practices and services four days a week during school term time and over the festivals of Christmas and Easter. Chorister life is busy but a lot of fun, and the benefits of singing are wide, including free musical tuition and singing lessons, and helping with literacy, numeracy, social skills and more. See below for details of how to join.

The adults include school-age and post-school choral scholars, along with more experienced singers, and sing at services from Thursday to Sunday, and at a variety of events through the year including concerts, dinners, and informal gatherings.

The Girls’ Choir

The Cathedral Girls' Choir sings Evensong on Tuesdays and several weekends a term during term time. It is made up of girls aged between 11 and 18, and is directed by the Assistant Organist. They join with the adults of the Cathedral Choir for some Sunday services and at a number of special services in the church's year including Ash Wednesday, Mothering Sunday, and the Christmas Midnight Eucharist. The Cathedral Choir and Girls' Choir sing together at the Advent Procession, on Easter Morning and for concerts.

Visiting Choirs

We are always grateful to those from within the diocese and further afield who bring music to our services when the Cathedral Choir are otherwise engaged. We also welcome visiting choirs to sing a whole week (each weekday except Wednesday) of choral services during choir holidays in addition to Sunday services. Sometimes we also have a vacancy for a visiting choir on a Saturday during term time. For a list of vacant dates please contact music@chelmsfordcathedral.org.uk.
