Chelmsford Cathedral

Advent and Christmas 2020

This year Christmas is far from cancelled but much of it will be on-line!  And we welcome you to join us throughout Advent, as we prepare to wonder with the shepherds again at the birth of Jesus Christ.

As government guidelines change, this page will inevitably change with it, so do check back regularly as all updates will appear here.  But for now, let us take you through what’s planned and invite you to join us across our various platforms.

Livestreamed through our Facebook pages:

Sunday 29th November: An Advent Evensong.  A reflective service to start this season of Advent.

On Fridays throughout Advent at 5.15pm a candlelit service of evensong will take place in the Cathedral, available to watch on our Facebook page.  There will be additional services on Thursdays throughout December too.

Sundays in Advent:

On Sunday 20th December at 3.30pm, Nine Lessons and Carols will be premiered on our Facebook page.

Additional services are planned on Sunday 6th and 13th too – more details to follow.

More Comfort and Joy:

We have lots more planned on our social channels from an Advent reflection from Canon Ivor Moody and an Advent craft for children, to a series of reflections from the ministry team on the Christmas story and Christingle making from home.  Our choirs have been busy recording carols too which we look forward to sharing with you.  If you haven’t yet discovered our Facebook page, do check it out at @chelmsfordcathedral  All links to clips and services will be put on this page for you to watch afterwards.

On Instagram:

Throughout Advent, we are inviting you to join with us in sharing your photos around the theme of Comfort and Joy, Hope and Light.  Each day we will post a photo from the Cathedral using the hashtag #ouradvent  Do send us your clips or share them with us.

Services in the Cathedral:

We really hope we can open the Cathedral for services again before Christmas. However, the traditional Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services will be livestreamed from our beautiful building.  If services are allowed to take place, we will wait until we have received guidelines before sharing with you how tickets can be obtained.  The information will be updated here and through our social media, but this is not expected until mid-December at the earliest.  The office will not be able to hold any waiting lists or take requests for tickets.

And throughout all this, our Cathedral remains open everyday, from 10.30am to 3.30pm (12 noon to 3pm on Sundays) for you to come in and light a candle and pray throughout this season of Advent.  If restrictions are relaxed in December, we may be able to hold other services, so do check both here and in the scrolling events diary on our home page.
