Chelmsford Cathedral Chelmsford Cathedral

Volunteering

Could you be our next volunteer?

There are around 200 volunteers here at Chelmsford Cathedral covering a great many roles which allows the Cathedral to open seven days a week, be a home to many community groups and continue to offer free entry to visitors.  We’d love you to join us!

Becoming a volunteer can give you an opportunity to pursue interests and meet new people, share your skills and learn new ones.  You could volunteer for just a couple of hours or more regularly.

There are various interesting and exciting roles you can take on as a volunteer at Chelmsford Cathedral. Some of the areas we're currently recruiting for include:

Welcoming and caring

The Cathedral is open every day to visitors.  Sunday Welcomers are a key role, welcoming everyone to the Cathedral on Sunday mornings. Our Day Chaplains are there to listen and talk.   Pastoral Care is at the heart of much of the voluntary activities inside and beyond the Cathedral.

Behind the scenes

The Flower Guild provide the flowers in the Cathedral, members working in teams as part of a rota.

Our Events Team supports our evening and weekend events and concerts.  Members set up, check tickets, provide refreshments and have a great time!

Children and Young People

Little Robins give young children playtime with their parents alongside our Children and Family’s Minister.

Junior Church meets during the Sunday morning service.

School Visits: Our school visits have increased in recent years, giving school children many activities to enjoy in the Cathedral setting.

In and around our services

There are a number of roles that our volunteers fill in our Sunday services, from reading, assisting at communion, leading prayers and Fellowship at home. Our Sunday Morning Coffee team volunteers provide welcome refreshments after the Sunday morning service.

The Helping Hands team give invaluable support at our larger services providing refreshments.  If you enjoy making other people smile with a piece of cake and a cup of tea, there could be a role for you here!

Community

Volunteers take on roles in our Social & Fundraising Committee, organising exciting events such as the Cathedral Ball and the Cathedral Dinner.  The group raises much-needed funds for the Cathedral and have a lot of fun doing so.

If you would like to volunteer during the day, our Welcome on Wednesday team serve drinks and offer friendship to members of the community in the Cathedral on a Wednesday afternoon.
