Welcome to Chelmsford Cathedral website.

‘In the power of the Holy Spirit, we seek to be a transforming presence, welcoming and serving in the name of Jesus Christ.’

This is one of the smallest Cathedrals in England in one of the largest Diocese.

Chelmsford Cathedral surprises people. On first sight it looks a surprisingly modest parish church. "Surely this isn't the Cathedral" people often say or think. But when they step inside they are often amazed by its sense of space, light and colour.

The Cathedra The Cathedral lets you know it's a Cathedral with the Bishop's Throne or 'Cathedra', prominently placed in front of the east wall.

It lets you know through its modern artworks, small and huge that it is a place of seeking and finding, a place that cherishes the beauty of Holiness.

It lets you know it's a House of Prayer with its candles lit on the High Altar.

The altar with its candles alight

It lets you know through its rhythm of services day by day and Sunday by Sunday, that worship matters and is at the heart of what we do; listen to our choirs and you'll hear how much we value Christianity as a 'singing faith' (John Rutter).

Look at our activities and you will see that we take education and mission seriously, as we engage with Chelmsford, Essex and East London in numerous ways.

Our current priorities are:

  • to continue to strengthen our core activities of worship and prayer, and to develop a sense of sacred space within the Cathedral;
  • to develop our commitment to mission, especially our mission partnership in Africa with Kenya and Swaziland;
  • to develop our thinking, theology, teaching, and practical action in relationship to the environment and the challenge of Climate Change;
  • to establish a more formal and progressive structure for adult education and to continue to be a resource for education within the Diocese;
  • to develop the involvement of young people and young families and to bring on a new generation in the Cathedral in response, responsibility and service;
  • to focus on the wellbeing of Chelmsford and its needs; through the Street Pastors initiative, through strengthening our partnerships with the Town Centre churches and continuing to develop our links with Brentwood and Leicester Cathedrals;
  • to build on the former Festival, starting with the Christian Festival in 2008, and Music, and Mystery plays and the Flower Festival in 2009;
  • to work on the Cathedral management structures by developing a Senior Management team, an Audit Committee and by following through our work on "Success through People" and Stewardship.

This church has been a parish church for centuries and continues to be so, and we are proud of our parish roots. We became a cathedral in 1914.

Our current Bishop is John Gladwin who was installed here in 2003. Our Diocesan website is http://www.chelmsford.anglican.org

I hope you enjoy exploring this website, and hope that you will visit us and share in our worship at this intimate and magnificent cathedral.
