Welcome to Chelmsford Cathedral website.

‘In the power of the Holy Spirit, we seek to be a transforming presence, welcoming and serving in the name of Jesus Christ.’

This is one of the smallest Cathedrals in England in one of the largest Dioceses.

Chelmsford Cathedral surprises people. On first sight it looks a surprisingly modest parish church. "Surely this isn't the Cathedral" people often say or think. But when they step inside they are often amazed by its sense of space, light and colour.

The Cathedra The Cathedral lets you know it's a Cathedral with the Bishop's Throne or 'Cathedra', prominently placed in front of the east wall.

The Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Chelmsford, the Rt Revd Stephen Cottrell Diocesan Website

It lets you know through its modern artworks, small and huge that it is a place of seeking and finding, a place that cherishes the beauty of Holiness.

It lets you know it's a House of Prayer with its candles lit on the High Altar.

The altar with its candles alight

It lets you know through its rhythm of services day by day and Sunday by Sunday, that worship matters and is at the heart of what we do; listen to our choirs and you'll hear how much we value Christianity as a 'singing faith' (John Rutter).

Look at our activities and you will see that we take education and mission seriously, as we engage with Chelmsford, Essex and East London in numerous ways.

Our priorities for the years 2010 - 2013 are:

As a Cathedral Congregation we aim to:

  • Offer our best in worship and welcome.

  • Grow as disciples of Jesus Christ and encourage one another in missions and ministry.

  • Seek and encourage a way of life that is both generous and sustainable.

  • Engage with the challenges of our society and world.

  • Value and develop our special relationships and working partnerships.

This church has been a parish church for centuries and continues to be so, and we are proud of our parish roots. We became a cathedral in 1914.

Our Diocesan website is http://www.chelmsford.anglican.org

I hope you enjoy exploring this website, and hope that you will visit us and share in our worship at this intimate and magnificent cathedral.
