The Cathedral maintains a traditional choir of twenty two boys and twelve gentlemen whose prime responsibility is to maintain a pattern of regular choral services from week to week.
The choirboys, known as choristers, range from eight to thirteen in age. They come to the Cathedral for practices and services on six days a week during school term time and over the religious festivals of Christmas and Easter.
There are three lay clerks and three choral scholars who sing at all of the choral services where the full choir is needed. In addition there are several voluntary singers who complete the team .

The Consort is made up of twelve girl choristers aged between 11 and 18 years old who can attend any school in the area. During school term-time the choir sings a weekly choral service on Tuesday and frequently joins with the male altos, tenors and basses of the Cathedral Choir for festival services and concerts. In recent years the choir has broadcast on BBC television and radio, been on tour and recorded a CD.
The members of the Consort have constructed their own web page, which can be seen at www.freewebs.com/chelmsford_cathedral_consort/
The Cathedral Voluntary Choir
The Voluntary choir was formed in Epiphany 2001. This group of adult singers provides the music at many of the services during the year when the Cathedral Choir is on holiday. Each service is usually preceded by a couple of Wednesday evening rehearsals. Members of the choir also take part in the Association of Cathedral Voluntary Choirs Festival, held yearly around the country.
Applications for membership should be made to the Assistant Director of Music at adom@chelmsfordcathedral.org.uk or contact 01245 294498.
Information about scholarships for 2012-2013 is now available:

We warmly encourage choirs from within the diocese and further afield to visit the cathedral and lead our worship during holidays and on occasional Saturdays throughout the year. Here is the schedule for the academic year 2011-2012, for those choirs who like to plan ahead. Please call the music department directly on 01245 294498 or email music@chelmsfordcathedral.org.uk
Whilst many Cathedrals around the country have a residential choir school attached, Chelmsford is fortunate in having the support of two state schools and one private school that together form its Choral Foundation. Founded in 1994, this provides a secure financial and educational base for the choristers. Through the work of its Liaison Committee it encourages a supportive and creative environment enabling the heritage of Anglican choral music to thrive.
Parents of prospective choristers (age 7-9) who attend these or other schools in the locality are invited to contact the Music department for further information on 01245 294498.
The Choir Association exists to support the choir. For further detail, please click here.
Church Music Awards for Choristers are under the patronage of the Bishops of Brentwood and Chelmsford. For further information, please click here.
The Purpose of the CCOCA, which was formed in 2009 is to build and maintain fellowship between past and present members of the Cathedral choirs. It works alongside the Choral Foundation and Choir Association. The Association is informal and all former members of any of the Cathedral choirs, and members of the music staff are welcome to join. For further information, please click here.
A programme of Friday Lunchtime concerts takes place throughout term-time, most of the year. These usually feature the Cathedral Organs on the first Friday of the month. Please click here for more details
There are two new organs in the Cathedral. The nave organ, under the tower at the west end, is a four manual instrument with mechanical action built by NP Mander and completed in 1994. The chancel organ (1995) is a two manual accompaniment instrument which is also mechanical and from which much of the nave organ can also be played. You might wish to visit the Mander Organs website for more information on these and other organs:
