Programme Summary

TWENTY-THIRD CHELMSFORD CATHEDRAL FESTIVAL

13-20 MAY 2006

The programme for the twenty-third Chelmsford Cathedral Festival has now been published by Peter Nardone, the Artistic Director and Director of Music at Chelmsford Cathedral.

The Festival opens on 13 May with the renowned Academy of Ancient Music, directed by Richard Egarr, in a programme of J.S Bach, C.P.E Bach and Telemann concerti. The Southbank Sinfonia, the popular resident orchestra now in their third year, end the Festival on 20 May with an all-Russian programme including Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3 (soloist Jonathan Phillips) and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6. They also provide a glittering concert showcase on 18 May with Mozart’s Horn Concert No. 4 and Clarinet Concerto plus Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, with solists taken from their own talented ranks..

In between, if you like song, come to Echoes of Essex on 14 May when Ruth Holton, Tim Carey and musical friends will perform, amongst others, songs by local man Armstrong Gibbs. For wind enthusiasts the London Serenade on 15 May play Krommer, Beethoven and Mozart. Brass fans can listen to jazz, rock and film music from the Yorkshire Imperial Urquahart Travel band on 16 May. On 17 May I Fagiolini and the SDASA Chorale from Soweto, in a unique fusion of South African and Renaissance European a cappella, each celebrate their twentieth anniversaries in this fascinating cultural blend. On 19 May the Gary Brooker Ensemble perform Within Our House, a concert of classics, rock and gospel, amongst which they will perform the timeless A Whiter Shade of Pale, the debut hit that Gary had with Procul Harum.

In addition there is a programme of lunch-time concerts in local churches with Eric Witham’s Alternative Organ Recital, the Stondon Singers performing ancient, modern and gospel music, and recitals by David Hall, piano, the Marquis Wind Quintet and Boreham Ladies Choir and Barbershop. The superb Essex Dance will also perform, in the Cathedral, on the last Saturday morning..

Throughout the week there will be an exhibition of art in the Chelmsford Library Gallery. RHS Hyde Hall’s popular talks and demonstrations will be here again, the subjects being ancient gardens and plants for the future. The Anglia Ruskin University lecture will be given by Lady Marie Stubbs. And the streets will be full of community and school dance and music groups entertaining the locals.

I Fagiolini & the SDASA Chorale
In 1998 a crossover album as released that had everyone in the choral world talking: a combination of traditional South African choral music with the pure sound of Renaissance polyphony.  The tracks like “Ah Robin” became instant hits on Classic FM and resulting live show was toured to South Africa:country-region> and, very briefly, in the UK:country-region>.  Yet where some crossovers fail as each  artist loses their identity, the beauty of Simunye is the distinct sound of each word creating something new.  Now as both groups celebrate their 20th anniversaries, Simunye comes to the UK:country-region> for a final tour.
To include:
R Williams/Koapeng – Ah robin
Machant/R Williams – Douce dame jolie
Clements – No right there/Edweni
Gibbons/ Williams – O clap your hands
Kiva Zula Senzi – Traditional Zulu arr. Dlmini
