CATHEDRAL PLANS AHEAD DESPITE THE SNOW
The community of Chelmsford Cathedral launched a new season of concerts yesterday despite having to cancel the first in the series last Friday(Jan 8). Lynne Creasey, a harpist, with a flautist (yet to be named) gives a recital on Friday (Jan 15) at 12.30 with the Brentwood School Big Band all set to entertain on the following Friday (Jan 22) at 12.30. Refreshments will be served as usual from 12 noon.
Other artists scheduled to participate include The Coggeshall Baroque Trio (Feb 12); The Fidelio Singers (Feb 19) and the Forest School Chamber Orchestra (Feb 26).
Though numbers were down for the Carol service to mark the Epiphany last night (Sun, Jan 10) the Cathedral Consort (Girls Choir) and the men of the Cathedral Choir conducted by Oliver Waterer, Assistant Director of Music, received an appreciative reception after the service conducted by the Dean, the Very Revd Peter Judd.
PROGRAMME FOR LENT IS LAUNCHED
There will be special preachers for the Choral Eucharists in Lent at the Cathedral starting with the Revd Canon Clare Edwards, Canon Pastor of Canterbury Cathedral on Sun, Feb 21. The following Sundays the speakers are : the Revd Canon Dr Jane Steen, Canon chancellor of Southwark Cathedral (Feb 28); the Very Revd Adrian Newman, Dean of Rochester Cathedral (March 7); the Revd Canon Michael Hampel, Canon Precentor and Vice-Dean at St Edmundsbury Cathedral (March 14) and the Revd Dr Richard Burridge, Dean of King's College, London (March 21).
It is the first time that so many distinguished preachers have been assembled for a series of Sunday services in Lent at the cathedral.
Lunch times in Lent are also catered for with soup and a roll, fruit and tea or coffee served "under the Tree of Life" in the north transept at 12.15, starting on Thursday, Feb 26 with the Precentor, the Revd Canon Simon Pothen as speaker.
