FAREWELL JAZZ FOR THE BISHOP The Bishop of Chelmsford, the Right Revd John Gladwin retired in jazz style on Saturday (July 18) at Chelmsford Cathedral with a Thanksgiving service attended by hundreds of people with eight bishops and eight mayors from different parts of Essex. A jazz reception followed in the cathedral with representatives from all facets of community life in the county and in East London with its 612 Anglican churches.

The service led by the bishop himself from his cathedra included tributes from the Lord Lieutenant, the Lord Petre; Canon John Spence, chairman of the diocesan finances; Judith Judd, representing clergy wives and Dr Daleep Mukarji, secretary-general of Christian Aid. Lessons were read by the RC Bishop of Brentwood, the Right Revd Thomas McMahon and by Mrs Lydia Gladwin. Peter Nardone, director of music at the Cathedral ,included his own his own farewell anthem in the service.

The HM. Treasury minister, Stephen Timms ; MPs Simon Burns and Eric Pickles, and Lady Platt of the House of Lords were among those present.

After laying down his pastoral staff across the altar at the end of the service, the Bishop and his wife proceeded down the nave to meet members of the huge congregation after listening to " Reflection in D," by Duke Ellington played by the Music Hors d'oeuvre Jazz Band. NEW ARCHDEACON TO BE INSTALLED

The new Archdeacon of Harlow, the Revd Canon Martin Webster, Team Vicar of Waltham Abbey, Essex is to be installed next Sunday evening (July 27) at 6pm., when bishop makes his final appearance. The visiting choir is from Waltham Abbey. The Right Revd David Hawkins, Area Bishop of Barking will give the address.

PRAYERS FOR ST ANDREW'S

Bishop Gladwin was due to speak at the fiftieth anniversary of St Andrew's Church, Melbourne yesterday (July 19) on the vicar's 50th birthday (the Revd Paul Greenland). Prayers were said at the Cathedral services in their honour.
