CATHEDRAL FOCUS ON AFRICA
Members of the congregation of Chelmsford Cathedral will celebrate Africa Sunday on June 7 to highlight the work going on in two parts of that continent: The existing work in the diocese of Swaziland and Embu, with workers the Revd Andrew and Rosemary Symonds, and the other part of the mission partnership in Kenya where the congregation are involved in The link with the support for a new medical centre at Embu.
The secretary of the Cathedral's Africa Group, Mrs Lesley Barlow hopes that the service at 9.30 - an All-age Eucharist - will capture some of the vibrant praise and joy characteristic of so much African worship. Liturgy from Kenya will be used. The celebrant will be the Revd Canon Roger Matthews, Director of Mission and Ministry.
"The post-Communion prayers will be accompanied with sweeping arm movements that make visual the meaning of the words of prayer," says Mrs Barlow. All welcome. An African lunch will be held afterwards in the Chapter House at 12.30. Tickets at £9 (children, £5) are available through the Cathedral Office on 01245 294489.
CELEBRATING PURCELL
The concert on Friday evening (June 4) in the Cathedral will celebrate the music of Henry Purcell on the 350th anniversary of his birth. Artists include James Bowman, counter tenor and tickets at £16 to £20 will be available at the south door (7pm for 7.30pm). More information on 01245 294483.
CELEBRATING YOUTH WORK
Those members of the former Young People's League at the Cathedral will meet in the Chapter House on Sunday, June 7 at 4pm tfor the dedication of the YPL banner followed by a tea party. Already 40 people have pledged support for a youth group that closed 40 years ago. More information from the Cathedral Office on 01245 294489.
MUSIC AT LUNCH TIME
The concert on Friday in the Cathedral will be given by Samuel Rathbone, organ. 12.30 Refreshments from 12 noon.
ECUMENICAL OCCASION
The Bishop of Brentwood, the Right Revd Thomas McMahon preached at a service of Vespers at Chelmsford Cathedral on Sunday (May 31) when the joint choirs of the two Cathedrals sung Vespers. The Bishop pf Chelmsford, the Right Revd John Gladwin led the prayers.
