FILLING IN THE GAP IN CATHEDRAL PRAYERS

The priest responsible for the liturgy at Chelmsford Cathedral, the Revd Canon Simon Pothen, decided he should attempt to "fill in the gap" so that the Church of England services in the lectionary are now complete. His new book,"Intercession for Daily Prayer"was launched after Choral Evensong last night ( May 17).

Canon Pothen a Benedictine, came to the Cathedral as Precentor 18 months' ago and is now established as the liturgist. The book is available at the bookstall at £8.80p.

TRIBUTE TO PURCELL At the same service special music was sung by the Cathedral Choir to commemorate the birth of Henry Purcell 350 years. Purcell is also honoured with a concert on Friday, June 5th in the Cathedral when the Director of Music, Peter Nardone will conduct the choir and a baroque orchestra in Purcell's works. The soloist is James Bowman, counter- tenor. Tickets at £16 to £20 are available on 01245 294486 Proceeds go towards the Chelmsford Cathedral Choral Foundation.

PILGRIMS RETURN

Twenty members of Chelmsford Cathedral congregation returned from the Holy Land last night (Sunday May 17) where they visited the Christian sites in a tour led by the Revd Canons Andrew Knowles and Richard More.

SERVICE OF HEALING

The Revd Katie Hacker-Hughes, chaplain of Farleigh Hospice will preach at service of Healing and the Laying on of Hands at the Cathedral on Sunday (May 24) at 6pm. All are welcome.

ASCENSION DAY AT CATHEDRAL

Services of Holy Communion on Thursday (May 21) Ascension Day at the Cathedral are at 8.15am, 10am and 7.45 pm (Sung).

PRAM GROUP CELEBRATE

An indoor picnic was held at the Chapter House on Saturday (May 16) to celebrate 30 years of the Cathedral Pram Group (meetings on Wednesdays in the Chapter House). A party is scheduled for September.

POLICE IN CONCERT

The Essex Police Choir will sing at the Friday lunchtime concert in the Cathedral on May 22 at 12.30. Refreshments are served from 12 noon.
