NEW COMPOSER OF 83 SURFACES IN ESSEX
A former teacher who lives in Hatfield Peveril, Essex will hear his music performed in public for the first time in Essex at the weekly lunchtime concert at Chelmsford Cathedral on Friday (May 15) at 12.30.
John Hare, 83, has been composing tunes at the piano since 1975 but suddenly his music has "surfaced" with a recital of his works by the pianist, David Elwin at a church recently in the City of London when Chelmsfordian, Alan Woods, organiser of the Cathedral's weekly concerts happened to attend.
Mr Hare, a widower, is also an inventor and during his college days in London built a manual orrery for children to learn about the planets, a development he says that led to his invention of the ring-orbit micro-orrery. His interest in languages got him teaching posts in India and in the Middle East. For some years he lived in France
OLD CHORISTERS LAUNCH ASSOCIATION
Former members of the Cathedral Choir founded their own Old Choristers' Association on Sunday (May 10) following Choral Evensong when specially commissioned canticles by Philip Moore, formerly Director of Music at York Minster were sung. The address given by the Precentor, the Revd Canon Simon Pothen, emphasised the "constancy" of choral singing. Following the service, an organ recital was given by the Organ Scholar at Chelmsford, James Norrey.
Two former directors of music at the Cathedral, Dr Graham Elliott and John Jordan were present. (Photographs available on request)
