ORCHESTRA WELCOME FOR BISHOP AT EASTER
Chelmsford Cathedral's own all-age orchestra will welcome the Bishop, the Right Revd John Gladwin for his sermon on Easter Day. The orchestra comprised of members of the congregation will play formally at the Choral Eucharist at 11.15am. Other services on Easter Day are the traditional Prayer Book service of Holy Communion at 8am; an all-age Eucharist at 9.30 (the Dean) and Evensong at 6pm.
The writer, the Revd Susan Sayers will be the speaker on Good Friday at 12 noon followed by the choir singing the Liturgy. Earlier, members of the congregation will join in the Procession of Witness arranged by Churches Together in Chelmsford with a drumhead service in the town precinct at 11am. In the evening, the Voluntary Choir sing "The Crucifixion," by John Stainer in the Cathedral, 8pm. Admission free.
Further information about the services and events at the Cathedral for Easter is available in a leaflet from the south porch. Holy Week begins this Sunday with an outdoor Procession of Palms and Eucharist led by Douglas the donkey from Pheasant Hall Farm, Little Baddow at 10.30am symbolising Christ riding into Jerusalem.
A MUSIC ADDITION TO BRAHMS
The Lavolta Trio playing at the Cathedral lunchtime concert on Friday realised that the one work they were scheduled to play, the Trio No 3 in C, by Brahms was not quite long enough to fill the programme time and so they invited composer, Gordon Carr to write a short piece based on some of the composer's famous lullabies.
The Trio, Sally Mays, piano, Joyce Fraser, violin and Felix Buser, 'cello received a great welcome and so did the composer Gordon Carr as they played his introductory tribute. At the concert given by the Chelmsford Male Voice Choir on March 13, the sum of £500 was contributed towards Comic Relief from the weekly "promenaders". The concert this Friday (April 3) is an organ recital by Peter Nardone, at 12.30.
CALLING THE YOUTH OF THE 'THIRTIES
Cathedral members, Douglas and Joyce Britton are trying to trace Cathedral members who enjoyed the youth work 40 to 50 years ago in the "Young People's League". A banner which was used at special services and youth pilgrimages is being framed to be placed in St Cedd's Hall as a permanent reminder of their fellowship.
Those wishing to help with a donation or to attend the event should contact Mr and Mrs Britton via the Cathedral Office in New Street, 01245 294489. Former members are all welcome at the event which will be held sometime in June.
COFFEE FOR EASTER
The monthly Coffee morning at the Cathedral Chapter House will take place on Saturday (April 4) from 10am to 12 noon. All welcome.
