CHALK SYMBOLS FOR BLESSING OF HOMES
Folk at Chelmsford Cathedral were given pieces of chalk at the All-age Eucharist yesterday (Jan 4) to write on the wood above their front doors to indicate a blessing for the gifts offered at the Feast of the Epiphany by the three wise men.
The chalk, blessed by the Dean, the Very Revd Peter Judd "is used to ask God's blessing on those who live, work or visit the house throughout the year." The letters, CMB symbolise the wise men - Casper, Melchoir and Balthazer. A short service for today (Twelfth Night) was offered to the congregation so that they can apply the letters and pray for those in the house. The letters are chalked between the year:eg- 20+C+M+B+09. The initial letters also mean, "May Christ bless this house."
The Dean asked people to re-dedicate themselves each year : chalk is used " as a tool to teach children in their games. Now it may be used to mark the door of our homes as symbols of the wise men who came to adore the Christ-child." In view of the height, children and those unable to reach may use the chalk by the side of the door. The Dean and congregation hope that people coming to a house will find a welcome.
